Luke 10:38-42 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
There are many things in this world, which takes away our Joy in the Lord. A spirit of sadness may engulfs us certain times. This spirit comes in a way of thoughts, some events happened, some things that we expect that is going to happen tomorrow. All these things will try to make our spirit sad. When our spirit is sorrowful for some reason, we will loose the joy of the Lord in our heart and countenance.
Martha was engulfed by the worldly cares and that pushed her heart to be sorrowful because of the weight of the work that needs to be done. This sadness pushed her to ask that question to the Lord, which exhibited frustration. She lost the joy in the presence of the Lord because of the external cares, which made her sad. Mary on the other hand enjoyed His presence and she retained the Joy that our Lord gives to our spirit. She ignored the pressure of the worldly cares and she was in pursuit of God to be with Him and to hear His voice. In children of God, the presence of the Holy Spirit is there in their hearts. When His presence is there, it is our spirit’s decision to enjoy in His presence or to be sorrowful. If we decide to pick the worldly cares and its grief then we will never have Joy in our hearts. Always there is something waiting to disturb us. However, if we decide to pursue the relationship with the Lord through the Holy Spirit by ignoring the cares of life, then the Joy of the Lord will be abundant in our life. If we don’t listen to the Holy Spirit, then it will be tough to implement this. When God call us for a time of fellowship, then it is better to leave everything that we do, and to sit in His feet. This will give us the power to overcome those cares and other saddening thoughts and restores the Joy that is robed by this world and the enemy back to our heart.
