II Cor 7:10, 11 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Godly sorrow is the design of God for a man’s spirit to find Hope in Christ through repentance. This sorrow leads us to repentance based on the conviction of the Holy Spirit and not through the condemnation of the heart. Verse 11 will not happen in our life if we do not repent through godly sorrow. Godly sorrow happens to two groups of people; one a person comes in to the fold of Christ and the second is a child of God who disobeys the Shepherd.
The people of Nineveh repented from their sins when they heard Jonah’s message. They truly repented with a godly sorrow. God saw their repentance and did not destroy them. Jonah 3:8 “But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.”When do we cry? When we are exceedingly sorrowful in our heart. Here, the king says to the people of Ninevah to cry mightly to God. God’s word brought this sorrow in their hearts, which enabled them to cry to Him for repentance. They believed the gospel that is preached to them and that sprouted the faith in God, and they truly repented. Faith and humility are the key for godly sorrow, which will lead to true repentance and salvation. If we do not have the humility to restore or to humble ourselves, then our heart is not ready for the salvation yet. God gives the gift of salvation when we truly repent and humble ourselves before God like the people of Nineveh. Do not harden your hearts or delay your repentance. This unhappiness will consume you until God’s purpose is accomplished in your life. Repent for the kingdom of God is near. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will receive the gift of God. That gift will restore the joy in the Lord. That is the beauty of salvation.
