Numbers 36: 5-7 “Then Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the Lord, saying: “What the tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks is right. This is what the Lord commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry whom they think best, but they may marry only within the family of their father’s tribe.’ So the inheritance of the children of Israel shall not change hands from tribe to tribe, for every one of the children of Israel shall keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.”

II Cor 6:14-16 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God.”

The desire that is within us will play a main part in getting the counsel from the Holy Spirit. This desire plays very important part in choosing the counsel. This is where prophecy and spiritual warfare comes into picture. We cannot go about for prophecy for certain things, and in the same time, we should not despise prophecies for certain things.

So how do we know this? This is where scripture comes in our picture. Here the scriptures will give us the guidelines to choose the way along with the counsel. For example, if you are about to marry somebody and you are wondering whether it is in God’s will. Even though this is a major decision in your life, if you decided to go behind prophets for this, then it will be to your folly. You have to see what scripture tells you in this decision making process. In Numbers 36, the daughter of Zelophehad came to Moses when the elders complained that if they marry to another tribe the inheritance would move from their tribe. Here God commands them that the daughters can choose what is best for themselves among their own tribe, so that the inheritance will not move to another tribe. Here, God gives them a command to choose themselves who is best according to their judgment, but on one condition that they should not go out of their tribe because of the inheritance issue. Next, Paul also writes to the Corinthians some words of wisdom to keep ourselves holy before the Lord by unequally not yoked with unbelievers (II Cor 6:11-18). God is not curbing your judgment but for your benefit that you should not be strangled with an unbeliever, He instructs us to stay away from them.

So, God has given guidelines in order to choose your spouse in many places so that you will not go away from His will. We should not go to a prophet and ask him whether I can marry this man or woman. On the contrary, you should not flow along with the circumstance saying that if it is not God’s will then it will not happen. If we are ignorant to the scriptures then it is to our folly. However, one thing should be emphasized here, do not be disturbed if you have already chosen a wrong decision. God is above all and He will be merciful to whom He wants. So let’s ask His mercy so that we can get back inline with God.

“God may not overrule the righteous judgment or decision that we take because He is righteous and His heart will lean towards it.”
