Rom 13: 13-14
13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
I Cor 10:31
31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
So how can we differentiate whether the desire to control ourselves is by our self-will or through the leading of the Holy Spirit? There is a very subtle difference in how we can differentiate this; but the outcome will vary vastly as a narrow road to a broad and wide road. It starts like a small angle of deviation but ends up somewhere where we may not be in the will of God at all. Let us take a common example. If you are going to a restaurant and see a buffet in front of you with many delicacies, what is your first thought if you have a natural desire towards food and eating? The price is same whether you eat more or less, so you do not loose anything from the money wise.
Self will indicates a person to control his or her eating because it will put more calories and fat into the body and it slows down your metabolic rate if you eat different kinds of meat at the same time. Why it is indicating that person is because, he or she may have an agenda to keep his or her body in great condition. What is the motive of keeping the body in great condition? It is to attract the opposite sex or it is just to avoid medical complication later or just an impulse that certain men and women will have obsession or embarrassment over their body structure. Whatever is the motive behind it, if that motive seeks glory for the self and it helps the lust of the flesh in other areas to get stronger, then it is from self will and it not from God.
Our body should glorify God and should not yield to any lust so that it does not come under its subjection. The lust will always lie on the door but we can rule over it to glorify God and not our Self. Your heart knows your motive; Holy Spirit will give you the conviction if you are His. Otherwise, your self will give conviction based on its agenda. Let us take these above two verses, as our guidance and God the Holy Spirit will guide you in whatever situation you are in right now and struggling to overcome it. Believe in His leading and do not doubt whether God will give guidance in these areas. God is concerned about your spirit, body and all your interest, because you are the temple of God the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own (I Cor 6:19).
